Ipoh: It was again a first half double strike that enabled India to hold off a fighting Malaysian side 2-1 and enter the Sultan Azlan Shah Hockey Tournament. It is India's fourth entry into the Azlan final.
First half goals by Shivendra Singh (9th) and Sandeep Singh (10th) put India ahead and they maintained the lead till the last minute before Mohammad Amin Rahim shot home a consolation goal for Malaysia.
With this win, India gathered 12 points from their six matches and set up a title clash against Argentina, who have finished with 14 points, on Sunday.
India, who lost their first two matches, continued with their impressive turnaround in the tournament to register their fourth consecutive victory and make the Azlan Shah final after a gap of 12 years.
India got into lead in the 9th minute when a Sandeep Singh slapshot from outside the Malaysian circle was deflected in by Shivendra Singh.
The spirited Indian forwards initiated a few more moves, one of which resulted in two consecutive penalty corners in the 10th minute. The Malaysians warded off the two threats but conceded a penalty stroke off the second short corner.
Sandeep Singh fooled the Malaysian custodian without much trouble to give his team a 2-0 lead.
After the break, Indian strikers showed some agility and created a few opportunities.
They won two more penalty corners, but could not extend their lead because of their poor execution.
The Malaysians stepped on the accelerator in the closing minutes to give some nervy moments for the Indians.
They got a penalty corner a few seconds before the hooter and Mohammad Amin Rahim at last put it past Adrian to score the consolation goal.

Re: India in Azlan final
This win should be final nail in the coffin of PAGAL SARDAR GILL'S attachment to Indian Hockey. Show us that you are happy with the resignation of PAGAL SARDAR with you win in this tournament.

Re: India in Azlan final
If a hastily picked and coached team can do so well can one imagine what a well trained and planned outfit can do???? We would thrash the aussies, the Dutch and the Germans!
Hockey is in India's DNA. All this talk of lack of size and fitness is crap. Indians are tough and fit and do have the killer instinct. It is all a question of facilities and tactics and backroom support.
A clever coach can use the talent at his disposal and hone the team. The aussies have done just that. They use every style of play and a lot of off the ball running. The opponent should never anticipate your moves. So keep him guessing. There should be imagination and several combinations. Now everyone knows Sandeep will flick the ball in and will counter him. So we need more imagination and seveal variations.
India should have a pool of 100 players from the junior level onwards. I repeat its all about tactics. Every player in the world is reasonably fit now. But better tactics wins the day.
How come we have no umpires at the tournament??? We need to work on these aspects -- these 'accessories' are important -- umpires and coaches of international claibre.
Incidentally, where is Ric Charlesworth?? Is he with the team??
Plus the media obssession with cricket should be replaced. We wont win a medal in the coming Olympics. This obssession with cricket has killed every other sport in the country. And, even after all that, we are still only in the top 5 or 6 in world cricket. And very few countries play the game.
It is all about marketing. Indian hockey should get a man like mallaya or Ambani. Once he pumps in money for five years with targets and timelines and schedules and performance guarantees, we will be back on top. Indian hockey should be run like a corporate set-up with stakeholders involved.
Despite every imaginable damage done to Indian hockey we have still reached the Azlan final.
Jai Hind!!

Re: India in Azlan final
Although we lost in the final but still let it be a new road map for us which we lost very badly after 1998 Asian Games Gold as IHF could not convert the success in to a sustained process either performance wise or sponsorship wise (even much bigger than the present scale) nor it could manage media attention like Cricket.
Its a victory in defeat for a very young side not only going through building up process but amidst turmoil.
