India, finally, win 3-1

Ipoh: Diwakar Ram's brace brought the smiles back into the Indian team as they finally registered their first win in three matches beating Olympic qualified Canada 3-1 and keep themselves in contention in the Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament.

Nine penalty corners was a clear indication that India dominated proceedings but it was Canada who took the lead first and would have scored a second making things difficult for India.

Canada had the lead in the ninth minute from their second penalty corner with Wayne Fernandez's firm push sailing high into the net past goalkeeper Adrian D'Souza.

India's equaliser came in the 45th minute when Diwakar Ram converted a penalty stroke.

Diwakar scored a second in the 51st minute off their 7th penalty corner, the low but powerful push beating the Canadian goalkeeper.

Mumbai lad Shivendra Singh got India's third goal after a Sardara Singh free hit deflected off SV Sunil's stick which Shivender slammed home. It was India's first win in three matches.
