New Delhi: KPS Gill's defiant 15-year tenure as the hockey boss came to an unceromonious end with the Indian Olympic Association today sacking him by suspending the IHF and appointing an ad-hoc committee in its place.

The "unanimous" decision to suspend IHF was taken at an emergency meeting of the IOA Executive Committee held here following the sting operation which caught secretary K Jothikumaran purportedly accepting bribe to select a player in the national team.

The Executive Committee has empowered the IOA President Suresh Kalmadi to appoint the ad-hoc committee.

Reading out a resolution of the Executive Committee, which was approved by more than 40 heads of various national federations, Kalmadi said the ad-hoc committee will take over IHF till further arrangements were made.

"The Executive Committee of the IOA today suspended the IHF and an ad-hoc committee will take over its affairs till further arrangements are made. It was a unanimous decision, nobody opposed it," Kalmadi told a crowded press conference here.

"We had invited Jothikumaran to present his point of view (on the bribery scandal) but he did not turn up. It was an opportunity for him to present his case. KPS Gill was present throughout the meeting and he presented his point of view," he said.

"The Executive Committee has empowered the IOA president to appoint the ad-hocc committee in consultation with the National Sports Federations and former Olympians," he said.

Asked for how long the ad-hoc arrangement will continue, Kalmadi would not commit anything but said he was looking forward to seeing India getting gold in the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

"We have taken a concrete decision though it was a painful one. We have a great responsibilty now to run the IHF. The Sports Minsiter has given hockey a priority sport and I hope the fortunes of the game in this country will rise again. We want to win gold in the Delhi Commonwealth Games."

Kalmadi also asked the national sports federations to submit their financial accounts at the earliest.

"We want trasparency and accountability in all the NSFs and I have asked all of them to submit their accounts as soon as possible".

Kalmadi also promised that the IOA would do everything to hold the 2010 World Cup in New Delhi.

"The IOA was one of the guarantors of the World Cup. We will do our best to ensure that the mega event is held in the country," he said.

Gill had come under intense pressure to resign after the sting operation with the Sports Minister M S Gill, Members of Parliament and several former hockey players demanding his ouster to save Indian hockey.

The clamour for Gill's head started in March this year when India failed to qualify for Olympics Games for the first time in 80 years, losing to Great Britain in the World Olympic qualifying tournament in Santiago, Chile. But the defiant hockey supremo refused to quit despite the team's fortunes plunging to new lows during his tenure.

Re: Gill sacked, IOA takes over IHF

This is the best thing that has happened to the IHF for over a decade. The Bonus is the sacking of GILL :)
The Indian Hockey is down but there is only one way now and it is up. So keeping the world cup in mind the IOA has to make immense of the this gift.

A NEW INDIAN HOCKEY CAN BE BORN... IF, WE DO NOT FIND MORE GILLS.

Re: Gill sacked, IOA takes over IHF

The writing was on the wall, and the wieght of deciet has caused the wall to crumble. The real culprit was Jothikumaran, always. He is the biggest disgrace that Indian Hockey has experienced. The loss of not getting an Olympic berth is no comparison to the deep hurt and ignomity that was wreaked by his avarice. If he did accept money, which I thnik he did, then he should be subjected to the full fury of the law. In a way, I feel bad for Gill. Given that he was a poor "general", loosing several battles during his tenure, he did some good for Indian hockey too. I think he had the ability to raise money and set a junior development programme in motion, which has the potential to produce serious results. I foresee another potential problem. Handing over the reigns of the new IHF to ex-Olympians without proven management skills could be disastrous. IOA should do it right, finally. The next IHF should be chosen on the basis of merit and statutes should be drafted that makes it fully transparent. Passing the mantle to ex-players may sound good, but is not the soultion. It is an easy way out from a mess. It is time the IOA shouldered responsibility for the falure of Indian Hockey and make ammends. Do it right Mr. Kalmadi, do what should have been done 10 years ago. IHF should be professionaly managed with clear long term goals consistent with reality and not sentiments.

With the positive action taken by IOA, let's hope for a new dawn of Indian hockey. Perhaps we can even hope to recapture the old glory of yesteryears.

Re: Gill sacked, IOA takes over IHF

Thanks to IOA, at the last IOA had taken a good decision sacking Mr.KPS Gill and taking over the IHF. This action must have taken much more earlier so that the things which mr.Jyothi and others are doing are going on in the IHF since a long time. Now, its time for the people like sri Dhanraj Pillay and others to gain the lost glory of Indian Hockey. And hope that this committee helps the families of the former olympians who have given their blood and sweat to the Indian hockey and are not in a position to meet their both ends.

Re: Gill sacked, IOA takes over IHF

This entire episode is far reaching than just jothi being caught. a number of other officials might have been involved. i would have been doubly happy if gill too was caught in a similar sting to expose his true face. he can be a good cop but he knows nothing about hockey. interestingly pargat singh has been left out of the new setup ?

anyway its a disgrace to kps gill. he should have realised his worth and stepped down voluntarily. the new body should consider professional leagues like IPL, ICL to bring in money and expose the hidden talent. bring australian coaches, and discipline . change the attitude. it is not far when our national hockey team will fare better again. long live the decision to dissolve IHF.

Re: Gill sacked, IOA takes over IHF

It is sad to see Indian Hockey in turmoil, and these Board sackings were inevitable when India did not qualify for the Beiging Olympics. With a new Board and Ric Charlesworth at the Helm of INDIAN Coaching, the future will be good, providing the Coach is allowed to do his job HIS WAY. His way is the successful way and his results as a Player, Coach and politician speak for themselves. The hockey Purists love to watch the Indian style of hockey, and with Charlesworth's tough dicipline and training regime he will impliment, it won't be long before we see India back amongst the best hockey nations in the world. GOOD LUCK RIC.
