IPOH: India will need five years to rebuild their hockey team before they can match the top teams in the world.
Former India skipper and defender Pargat Singh, who is team manager for his country in the ongoing Sultan Azlan Shah tournament, made the observation after seeing Argentina thrashed India 5-1 on Friday.
“India are no longer a feared side anymore. And this is not good as we will be hosting the Commonwealth Games and the World Cup in New Delhi in 2010.
We now have a short and long term programme,” said Pargat.
The short term programme is targeted for the Commonwealth Games and the World Cup.”
He added that the long term programme is aimed for the 2014 World Cup.
“We should concentrate more on the long term programme to be on par with top teams in the world,” said Pargat, who is the Punjab Director of Sports.
India, eight-time Olympic champions, failed to qualify for the Beijing Olympics after losing 0-2 to Britain in the final of the Olympic qualifiers in Chile in March.
This is the first time since the 1928 Olympics India have failed to make it to the Games.
Pargat with 313 international caps said, that there were several reasons for the team’s failure in the Olympic qualifiers recently.
“The players lack the basic skills. Changing of coaches too often also affects the team’s performance,” said Pargat.
“A coach should be with the team for four years and a coach should not be changed after just one tournament.
“We also need more qualified coaches and artificial turfs in India to have a bigger pool of players.
“We only have four turfs in Punjab, which is too few for such a big state,” said Pargat who played for India from 1983 to 1997.
Pargat, who has captained the Indian team in 168 matches from 1989 to 1997, said poor administration and marketing was also one of the causes.
The Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) was suspended by the Indian Olympic Council (IOC) last month after the IHF secretary Jothi Kumaran allegedly took a bribe to include a 16-year-old player for the Sultan Azlan Shah tournament.
IOC took over the IHF and removed the president K. P. S Gill and Jothi.

Re: Need 5 years to rebuild: Pargat
PARGAT IS RIGHT WHEN HE SAYS THAT INDIA NEEDS FIVE YEARS TO REBUILD. HE IS TALKING FROM HIS EXPERIENCE AND IS A VERY ABLE AND AN EXPERIENCED PLAYER--WE SHOULD ALL UNITE IN THIS CAUSE AND TRY TO BUILD OUR TEAM UP TO THE MARK AND BRING BACK THE GLORY TO THE NATION--WHO STILL HOLDS THE WORLD RECORD OF MAXIMUM OLYMPIC GOLD MEDALS IN FIELD HOCKEY. THANK YOU.

Re: Need 5 years to rebuild: Pargat
I think Pargat Singh is spot on. I remember Ric Charlesworth saying something similar. Let us create an infrastructure that rewards and produces a continuous stream of players. There should be a proper league system in place and and national championships held every year. The equity and resources should be injected into the sport ....let there be proper facilities, astroturf pitches and qualified coaches, who not only know the game but bring in science and mechanics of hockey. Once success comes, the equity will be self generating too as the proflile raises.Cricket comes to mind here. When Ric says we have fallen way down on the world stage and there is a tremendous amount of work to be done, he is absolutely right. Botched up solutions (like in the past) only produce botched results. It is my hope that the Ad Hoc committee appointed by IOC realises how much the game has changed. Olympian appointments are not always wise, they played hockey ages ago and lack proper professional approach as well as the psychology needed today. You have to send observers at hockey tournaments around the world, even when India is not participating.Watching it on television or videos of other teams is not enough. You have to be there talking to the people and that way you know you opposition well. This point could not be illustrated better that the Santiago fiasco, the one man the GB team feared was Sandeep singh and when he was not there, their job was half done, with the other half done by the incompetent of the management if IHF in terms of planning the training prior to leaving for Santiago as well as the travel arrangements. GB played against top nations and were in Santiago two weeks prior to the tournament. In India's case they played against club sides in western Australia(no disrespect the clubs in Western Australia , they are of very good standard) and arrived the week before, and after a 24 hour flight. They should have played against tough opposition in Europe and arrived 20 days prior to the tournament to condition themselves as the time difference between India and Santiago is significantly more than between London and Santiago. Make Ric the chief coach and director and let him have a free hand in choosing the people around him. I am sure he has got the respect of Pargat, Bansal and others. Let them work with him. It is an opportunity not to be wasted. I could go on and on ...and am glad things are beginning to change in the right direction. We need to start at grassoots level, let there be badgers teams,U14,U16,U18 teams competing in their leagues and championships. We want captains who can marshall the team up and down the pitch like field marshalls. My remarks are not only for men , but equally for Women's team alike, for I believe, we can be world champions in both. The message for people at large(parents in particular) is that what you rather have, fit and proud people playing hockey, or youngsters on dope ,hooch and the rest. Other sports should of course be encouraged too, but that is not the subject of this topic. The bottom line is ...there is so much to be done. Let it be done in a professional, modern, scientific way with fairplay and accountability in every department.

Re: Need 5 years to rebuild: Pargat
I am fully agree with Pargat Singh and want to add that Indian player are not lack of Basic skills and lack of fitness. Those were the Hockey days when you needed more skills than fitness but in today's Hockey Fitness is priority over skills. I think local and center Govts. are also responsible for this disaster.

Re: Need 5 years to rebuild: Pargat
India needs at least 200 synthetic surfaces all over the country. Our kids have to start playing on synthetic surface. That's the only way!!

Re: Need 5 years to rebuild: Pargat
All the hockey stalwarts of India i.e. Aslam, Pargat, Zafar, Dhanraj are upto the task and there is no deny that they are capable. It would be interesting to see how they bring changes into the system. We've really deprived infrastructure of hockey, just a few turfs which you can count on fingers. Intl hockey is played on turfs and not on uneven ground.I think the new administartion should really attack from root level as long term planning.
Also, does anyone know which Sports Channel has more hockey coverage in USA ??

Re: Need 5 years to rebuild: Pargat
why can not we think of PPP (Public Private Partnership) for hockey. Create Private stakeholders from corporates to media fraternity ... to take stake in the game and builkd the game
Get professionals to bolster the game

Re: Need 5 years to rebuild: Pargat
I completely agree with Mr. Baldip Sidhu. To sum up, here are the points: 1) Make Ric the Director of Indian Hockey & give him a free hand. Let him chalk out the plan (both short term & long term) for producing a team capable of winning another eight golds. 2) Improve the infrastructure so that hockey can be played at school level. Arrange U14, U16, U18 tournaments at district & state level. 3) Make Public Private Partnerships & rope in stakeholders. To do that, the system has to be transparent. Once these things are done with sincere efforts, results will definitely come in.
