New Delhi: Indian Hockey Federation (IHF) chief K P S Gill on Friday condoled the death of Olympian Tarlochan Bawa, saying the late full back was among the finest and most committed exponents of the game.
"On behalf of IHF and myself as President of the Federation, I condole the death of Bawa," Gill said.
The 85-year-old Bawa died at his daughter's residence in Ambala on Thursday, leaving behind two daughters and a son.
Bawa was a member of the Indian team under Balbir Singh which won the Gold medal in the 1948 London Olympics.
Born on February 12, 1923, in Lahore, Bawa joined Punjab Police as Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) in 1949 in undivided Punjab and retired in 1981 as Superintendent of Police in Haryana.
Bawa represented Punjab in the Hockey Nationals from 1945 to 1956 and captained Punjab hockey team in 1952. He also led the Indian Hockey team in the Test matches against Japan.
Bawa was a regular visitor to PHL events in Chandigarh and his son is into coaching youngsters in Chandigarh.
"I hope we will repeat that (London Olympics) performance and bring back the memorable days of India winning Olympics. The members of the IHF express their condolence to the bereaved family," Gill said.
