"My job is to coach the Indian hockey team. The politics I leave to others. I also feel the players are only interested in playing hockey. If we can achieve results, everybody will be happy": Michael Nobbs

After a marathon meeting of more than five hours, Hockey India decided enough was enough and slapped a two-year ban on star players Sardara Singh and Sandeep Singh.

Their fault – repeated counts of indiscipline and the most recent one was to leave the training camp and head for Delhi. Secretary General of Hockey India, Narinder Batra, said both the players have a right to appeal against the ban and have been given 30 days time to lodge their protest.

“Today, we had a meeting to discuss the issue of Sandeep and Sardar, who left the camp in Bangalore on August 23 without the permission of the coach. The issue was discussed in detail and the players were also given an opportunity to explain their position,” Batra told in a press conference.

“It’s the third time in six months they have repeated such an incidence. Enough is enough and we felt some action needs to be taken against them. So they have been banned for two years during which they can’t participate in HI and International Hockey Federation (FIH) events. It was an unanimous opinion.”

Both the players can appeal against the ban within 30 days and a five-member committee will be formed to hear their case.

Even recently, both Sandeep and Sardara have time and again violated discplinary code. In May, they were not considered for the Sultan Azlan Shah tournament after they did not report for the national camp and went to play in the Belgium league. During the camp, they went off to attend a World Series Hockey event and were promptly served a show-cause notice. But they apologized and were made a part of the camp.

“Today also they gave in writing a representation that they left the camp with the coach’s permission. But it was a pre-decided thing because their tickets were booked in the afternoon and they asked for permission only in the evening.”

“It is not something that happened all of a sudden. Sandeep said that his son was ill, and that his wife and parents were also not well within a span of 30 days. If they had family issues they should have said this before the selection trials.”

The meeting was also attended by HI disciplinary committee chairman Pargat Singh, selectors Balbir Singh, BP Govinda and AB Subbiah, players’ representative Mukesh Kumar and Rajneesh Mishra, government observer Harbinder Singh, head coach Michael Nobbs, assistant coaches SS Grewal,  Mohd Riaz, Clarence Lobo and Jugraj Singh (coach), exercise physiologist David John and physio Srikant Iyengar.

Re: Two-year ban on Sandeep, Sardara

It's good that disciplinary committee took action. This should remind every player that you are not bigger than the game or the country. You just can't be blackmailing your team and the country just because you are good players. I know both of them are good player but both of them lacking discipline, pride and be a team player. What they have done is broke the "Trust" among coaches and the players. Who will trust them that they are giving 100%? Discipline is very important in any field. Without discipline nothing survives. All the players should have pride in representing their country and have team unity to achieve their common goal. Hope both of them learnt their lesson.

Good move. Sends the right signal. Also gives a chance to blood someone else and, who knows, they may do very well. Good luck to the Indian team always.

Let us also try not to run down the players or the coaches. They mean well. Or they won't be involved with hockey. It is a tough game and many sacrifices have to be made to be an Indian hokcey player; they have done all that. They are human and have emotions and so can be misunderstood, they vent their feelings; that's all. Let us leave it at that.

It is the system and the administration that needs cleaning up. Planning, foresight etc are objective issues and cannot be compromised. One should vent one's anger at all that.

I still feel the I&B Ministry should seriously look at DD sports. The channel is being seen largely by the poor in the rural tracts of india. Anyone with a choice won't see DD.

Now, when you have an audience of a few hundred million, profound and far reaching messages can be passed. What sense does it make to show motor sport or yachting to a farmer contemplating suicide?????

The anger should be directed against DD. They should constantly show hockey, kabbadi, volleyball, football, boxing, wrestling etc which resonate with the Indian ethos.

Whoever runs DD obviously can't find the word --- imagination --- even in the dictionary!!

I feel DD is the best vehicle for the revival of Indian hockey as the cradles of hockey are not the big cities.

For me, DD is a complete zero, the quintessential IDIOT BOX. Even the sports talk shows are so boring that they can be used as a weapon for mass euthenasia! Second thoughts, maybe the farmers are contemplating suicide because of it! Imagine being stuck at home on a rainy day with DD. God...there could be mass murder or suicide.

What are the telecast timings, pal? DD should buy feed from some channel covering it. Show it a day later, no problem. But show the matches and be patriotic. Very simple. You can't get an Australian and say --- change the face of indian hockey. No one can single-handedly.

Jai Hind!!

Re: Two-year ban on Sandeep, Sardara

Main aim of player is to play for INDIA .....then why will he come, get selected and than go back home.......and if two could not convince their logic of going back home than there is some thing special which so far has not been disclosed by them and people banning them know exactly......it will come out....very pathetic story. Once again federation have consumed players for their misconduct and nonsense reasons.....i believe so.........Pramod Batlaw
