Malaysia 1 New Zealand 1
Hosts Malaysia played out a fighting 1-1 draw against New Zealand to enter their third Sultan Azlan Shah final here in Ipoh. Malaysia will now meet India in the final on Sunday. Both the teams have met once in the final in 1985 which India won.
After a goalless first half, Malaysia took the lead in the 48th minute when Chua Boon Huat deflected in a pass from the top of the circle.
But the Kiwis fought back and equalized in the very next minute when Nicholas Wilson fired in a field goal in the 49th minute.
The Kiwis pushed hard in the last ten minutes and also earned their fourth penalty corner but the Malaysian goalkeeper Kumar Subramanium came off the line to take it on the pads.
Malaysia pulled back players into defence and the Kiwis got the width they were looking for but even with four forwards thrown upfront, New Zealand couldn’t find that slice of luck that would have given them the match-winner.
Malaysia had three penalty corners to New Zealand’s four.
