"My job is to coach the Indian hockey team. The politics I leave to others. I also feel the players are only interested in playing hockey. If we can achieve results, everybody will be happy": Michael Nobbs

India 2 Egypt 2

Yet again a soft start for Harendra Singh's boys as they were held 2-2 by the lowest ranked team in the competition in their opening match at the Azlan Shah Stadium here on Sunday.

Despite playing on a heavy pitch due to a downpour prior to the match, both teams set a fast and furious pace, especially the Egyptians who took the lead in the 8th minute through Mohamed Hassan's penalty corner strike.

Stunned by the goal, India doubled their initiative in attack and managed to equalise from a penalty corner in the 15th minute when penalty corner specialist Sandeep Singh sounded the board.

India launched waves of attack after the equaliser but failed to change the scoreline before the break.

Their reputation highly at stake, especially after having finished as the runner-up last year, the Indians continued to apply the pressure and deservedly took the lead through another penalty corner, this time taken by Shivendra Singh in the 49th minute.

The goal however, failed to dampen the spirit of the Egyptians who pulled off a unlikely draw in the 70th minute through Mohamed El Saied's penalty corner effort after a lapse in concentration by the Indian defence.

Egypt coach Jerzy Wybieralski said the players need to show a consistent and stable performance and need a little bit of luck to win when playing against a team like India.

Re: Egypt hold India 2-2

Our hype before tournaments begin is also our downfall. Let me explain, let us say our esteemded coach Harendra Singh had said "We are on a rebuilding phase and have included several new entrants in the team to try them out. We also have some injury issues with Raghunath and Gurbaj. I cannot say that we shall win, but try we shall. We are going to play our hearts out and I cannot say anything about the outcome. All I can say is, we shall not disappoint the millions of our fans when it comes to effort and application. We are going to play our hearts out". Instead, he says things like we shall win, we shall do this and do that etc. etc. This changes everything. And then to top it, we flunk. Miserably. Actually, we also don't play to our potential. Drawing with Egypt is not the problem. The problem is the team's commitment and application which is suspect. For the rest of the tournament, India's job is cut out; win all remaining matches and beat New Zealand twice. Not a tall order considering that our team is the best at Azlan Shah. And I'm not being conceited when I say this. I belive and know so. So drawing with Egypt maybe the best thing that happended to us at Azlan Shah. I hope I am right!
