Ipoh: Sandeep Singh's hat-trick couldn't save India as they blew a 2-0 lead and let the Kiwis come back into the match to win 3-4 in the first match of the Azlan Shah Cup hockey tournament here today.
Making a come back into the team, Sandeep converted all three penalty corners but the Kiwis scored twice in the first half and as many after the breather to walk away with full points.
For the winners, Andrew Hayward, Simon Child, Phillip Burrows and Gareth Brooks sounded the board.
India made a good start and were leading 2-0 with Sandeep converting both the penalty corners that came his way before Hayward first reduced the margin from a penalty corner and Child deflected home a pass just in time to go into the breather at 2-2.
In the second half, the Kiwis ruled the roost with Philip and Brooks slamming back-to-back goals to snatch the lead.
Though a field goal eluded them, India managed to win a penalty corner in this session and Sandeep was again bang on target as his rasping shot beat the Kiwi defence all ends up.
The Indians did everything they could for the equaliser but the Kiwi defence did well to thwart the raids till the end.

Re: Sandeep's hat-trick can't save India
No doubt recall of Sandeep has definitely helped the team, but it is unfortunate that the team hasn’t scored any field goal. There is no scoring power in these forward. We are missing Gagan, Prabjot (Player of the Tournament in OQ), Tushar, Deepak Thakur and Rajpal. We can’t rely only on PCs. Conceiving four goals in a match isn’t a good sign. In Coming matches India may suffer even worst defeats. Mean and narrow-minded IHF’s tactics are still hurting us. Absence of experienced defenders Dilip Turkey, kamalpreet and Harpal is badly felt.

Can IHF explain why Sandeep was kept out of the time all this time?

There is another daring drag flicker named Jugraj Singh (hero 7-4 win against Pakistan) who came back fit after unfortunate accident. He too is frustratingly ignored by IHF so far.

Re: Sandeep's hat-trick can't save India
no doubt that sandeep singh is good in penalty corner, but stiil he have to improve more in field.he is very slow in field.after dilip we must need a good defender.i m watching indian hockey since we won the junior world cup.and i didnt saw any of the player from that team in this azlan shah.i think that team was the best team i had ever seen from last 10 years, and why the players like tejbir singh, gagan, arjun, deepak are ignored, and must india have to take defender like kanwalpreet singh after dilip tirkey.i think he will be the best change of dilip.coz i watch him in so many matches he alwaz play for the team.he is the real fighter.and i think india is missing there fighter.
